Japan is still the future, and if the vertigo is gone, it really only means that they’ve made it out the far end of that tunnel of prematurely accelerated change. Here, in the first city to have this firmly and this comfortably arrived in this new century – the most truly contemporary city on earth – the center is holding.
— William Gibson
Written in 2001, Gibson’s observations about Tokyo at the time were spot on. If the ensuing decades haven’t been as kind to the future dreaming of the world’s first 21st Century city, the future－to paraphrase Gibson－is still here, only it’s now not so evenly distributed. The edge may have been blunted somewhat due to economic malaise and familiarity, but Tokyo is still a wondrous place to behold — and all around are glimpses of the future.
